Mr. Calvin M. Barnett, Jr.

FORT MEADE - Mr. Calvin M. Barnett, Jr., 89, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2016 in Winter Haven, FL. Mr. Barnett was born June 6, 1927 in Fort Meade, FL where he remained a life long resident. On Sept. 10, 1944, Mr. Barnett joined the United States Navy and served a 24 year tenure of duty. He was a WW II, Korea, and Vietnam veteran, serving on the U.S.S. Pickerel SS524, and among many awards, received the Antarctic Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. The completion of Mr. Barnett's military service in 1968 brought a new chapter to his life, where enjoyed working in his citrus groves, raising cattle and hogs, and made enough time for his hobby and love of woodworking. Mr. Barnett was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Meade, and a former member of the Fort Meade American Legion, Post #23.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin M. and Clara Weeks Barnett, Sr.; brother, Bobby Barnett; and sisters, Louise B. Fisher, Mildred B. Brewer and Janiece B. Rogers.

Mr. Barnett is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Elsie S. Barnett, Fort Meade, FL; son, Calvin M. Barnett, III and wife Katie, Atlanta, GA; daughter, Kathleen Pitts and husband Dr. Lane Pitts, M.D., Hattiesburg, MS; brother, Jimmy Barnett and wife Iona, Bowling Green, FL; sister, JoAnn Royster and husband Gene, Wauchula, FL; grandchildren, Lauren Pitts, Michael Pitts, Sophie Pitts, Genevieve Barnett and Olivia Barnett; sisters-in-law, Jean Feddema, Edna Steckhan and husband Jerry, all of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Ruth McCall, Wolseley, Saskatchewan, and Evelyn Barnett, Lithia, FL; brother-in-law, Dr. Robert Brewer, M.D., Logansport, IN; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 15, 2016 at Hancock Funeral Home, 945 E. Broadway, Fort Meade, FL. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Marion Sortore officiating. Interment will be in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.
