FORT MEADE - Mrs. Delha Chambliss Crutchfield, 100, died Wednesday evening May 27, 2015 in Lake Wales, Florida where she resided the last several years. She is survived by one son, Walter P. Crutchfield III of Fort Meade, Florida; three grandsons, Lawrence Scott Crutchfield, Christopher Lee Crutchfield, and Matthew Wade Crutchfield; and eight great grandchildren, Zachary Scott Crutchfield, Madison Rayne Crutchfield, Ryan Seth Parker, Gable Matthew Crutchfield, Elena Grace Crutchfield, Logan Christopher Crutchfield, Jackson Rhys Crutchfield, and Kendall Riley Crutchfield.
Mrs. Crutchfield was born on January 9, 1915 at “The Oaks”, a family home-place in Rawlings, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Alice Campbell Jones and Roger Lee Chambliss. She had one older brother, Roger Lee Chambliss Jr. and one younger brother, Campbell Goode Chambliss, both deceased. She grew up in the small, rural community of Rawlings, Virginia where her father was a farmer and School Board Superintendent of Brunswick County Schools. She attended Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood University) where she received her degree and teacher certification in 1938.
Mrs. Crutchfield taught elementary school at several locations in Virginia between 1938 and 1947 when she married Walter P. Crutchfield Jr. on June 25, 1947 at Concord Presbyterian Church in Rawlings, Virginia. She moved with her husband to his home in Fort Meade, Florida. Mrs. Crutchfield was active in women’s organizations associated with the First Methodist Church of Fort Meade and in the Fort Meade Garden Club. She also taught elementary school for several years in the Fort Meade, Florida area.
In 1981 the Crutchfield’s bought a summer cottage in the mountains near Brevard, North Carolina. For a number of years they spent part of the year in Florida and the summers in the North Carolina mountains. They finally decided to move permanently to Brevard, North Carolina. In 1998 Mrs. Crutchfield moved into Brighton Gardens, an assisted living facility in Charlotte, North Carolina where she lived until 2009, when she moved to Savannah Court in Lake Wales, FL where she remained until her death.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 6, 2015 from the graveside in Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade, FL with Rev. John Bryant officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 135 E. Broadway, Fort Meade, FL 33841.
