FORT MEADE - Rev. James Daniel Carnes, Sr., 93, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2019 in Bartow, FL. Rev. Carnes was born in Columbus, GA on August 8, 1926 and moved to Fort Meade from Tennessee several years ago. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Meade, and a former minister for the First Church of God, of Tullahoma, TN. Along with his ministerial duties, Rev. Carnes was a retired Aircraft Electrical Engineer with Pratt & Whitney in West Palm Beach, FL, and during his tenure at Pratt & Whitney, he worked on many notable projects including the Apollo and Thunderbird systems. He was a WW II U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving in the South Pacific, a member of the Fort Meade American Legion Post #23 of Fort Meades, and he enjoyed his friendship and socializing during breakfast with the Fort Meade Men's Coffee Club at Kiki's Egghouse.

Rev. Carnes was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse R. and Katherine Jansen Carnes; wife, Mary Ruth Johnson Carnes; and his siblings, Jesse Carnes, Charles Carnes, and Sarah Carnes.

He is survived by his son, James D. Carnes, Jr., Fort Lauderdale, FL; daughters, Sylvia Sleigh and husband Clifford, Parrish, FL, Catherine Simmons and husband Jim, Zolfo Springs, FL, Penny Rhoden and husband Lewis, Fort Meade, FL; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at the First Baptist Church, 307 E. Broadway, Fort Meade, with funeral services following at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kenny Slay officiating. Interment services will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Watson-North Memorial Park in Winchester, TN, with a visitation being held from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., and services following at 11:00 a.m.
