FORT MEADE – Mrs. Marjorie Flood Hancock, known affectionately by many as Margie, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2022 at her home in Fort Meade following a brief illness. Margie was born November 12, 1944 in Lakeland, FL and has been a lifelong resident of Fort Meade, where she was the owner, along with her husband and sons, of Hancock Funeral Home in Fort Meade.
Margie was the daughter of the late Charles Cavendish Flood and Lucille Truluck Flood, granddaughter of John Franklin Truluck and Ola Hiers Truluck; and she was the current matriarch of the Flood family of Polk County, being the last and youngest granddaughter of Luke Bredin Flood and Alicia Emily Whitney Flood who came to Fort Meade from Enniscorthy, Ireland in March, 1886 on the first passenger train to enter Fort Meade. Luke and Alicia Flood were also founders of Christ Church (Episcopal) in Fort Meade, and is the oldest active church in Polk County, FL; and Margie was proud to have served as the church organist for the last 21 years. Margie was a 1962 graduate of Fort Meade High School, and then went on to graduate from Florida Southern College in Lakeland in 1967. Following her college graduation, Margie married W. Allen Hancock on June 10, 1967, in the First United Methodist Church of Fort Meade by the Rev. S. Harry Russell, and then began teaching school at Riverside Elementary and then 6th grade at Fort Meade Middle School. In 1970, she began teaching music from her home and becoming a homemaker and mother for her two sons and husband along with serving as the organist for the First United Methodist Church of Fort Meade. She and her husband Allen, later opened Fort Meade’s first Hallmark card and gift shop, The Strawberry Patch, which she operated for several years all the while taking care of her family and overseeing the family citrus groves. Margie was a member of the Fort Meade American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Fort Meade Historical Society, Bartow Chapter of the D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution), member of Christ Church (Episcopal) in Fort Meade where she was currently the organist for the last 21 years, and a former longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Meade where she served as Organist, Sunday School Teacher, and children’s choir director. Music has been a large part of Margie’s life, as she has played the organ for churches for nearly 65 years, and in 2006 along with continuing her organist position, she took on the responsibility of being the co-owner, book keeper and backbone of her family business, Hancock Funeral Home in Fort Meade.
Margie was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and father-in-law and mother-in-law, George W. and Evelyn Forsythe Hancock; sister-in-law, Marilyn Waters Hancock, several aunts and uncles including, Lavinia Truluck Augustus, Mildred T. Miller and husband Cecil, Daisy Truluck, J.F. Truluck and wife Anne, Winnifred T. Brown and husband Canter, Benjamin W. Flood and wife Marian, several other Flood family cousins, uncles and aunts; and her lifelong friend, Betty Mac Mann Bridges.
Margie is survived by her husband of nearly 55 years, W. Allen Hancock; sons, Charles A. “Chuck” Hancock and W. Russell Hancock; brother-in-law, Tommy Hancock; nephew, Kyle Hancock; great-nephew, Tyler Hancock; and many cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Saturday, February 26, 2022 at Christ Church (Episcopal), 1 N. Cleveland Ave., Fort Meade, FL. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, February 27, 2022 n the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church, 135 E. Broadway, Fort Meade with Rev. William F. “Bill” Ivey, Rev. William “Bill” Hazelett, and Rev. William “Bill” Baldwin officiating, pianists, Chuck Hancock and Sylvia Spencer, and James “Jim” Jordan, as organist. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade.
