BARTOW - Dr. Rev. Harold E. "Harry" Armstrong, 67, passed away Sat., June 15, 2013 at his home of heart failure. Harry was born on August 26, 1945 in Enterprise, AL and spent his younger years growing up in Fort Meade, FL. He returned to Polk County in 2001 from North Augusta, SC after serving as a pastor for churches in the Southern Baptist Convention for many years. He was a member and former pastor of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church of Fort Meade where he retired, a former pastor of Stetson Baptist Church in Deland, FL, First Baptist Church of Pierson, FL and First Baptist Church of Louisville, GA. After graduating from Fort Meade High School in the class of 1963, Harry served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Theodore Roosevelt during the Vietnam Conflict. After his tenure with the U.S. Navy, he furthered his education by receiving a Bachelor's Degree from Stetson University, a Masters of Divinity from Southeastern University in Wake Forest, NC, and then receiving his Doctorate in Psychology from Notre Dame University.
Harry was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Armstrong, Sr.; brothers, Ralph Armstrong, Jr. and Bobby J. Armstrong. He is survived by his loving wife, Cathie Armstrong, Bartow, FL; son, Jacob Michael Conway Armstrong, Bartow, FL; daughters, Leah Armstrong Vaughn and husband William, Edgeville, SC and Mary Armstrong Johnson and husband Calvin, Trenton, SC; mother, Mrs. Ruby Aycock Armstrong, Fort Meade, FL; brother, Bill Armstrong, Fort Meade, FL; sister, Sue Bell, McMinnville, TN; grandchildren, William James Johnson and Joshua Patrick Johnson, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 17, 2013 at Hancock Funeral Home, 945 East Broadway, Fort Meade. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, c/o Fort Meade American Legion Post #23, P.O. Box 207, Fort Meade, FL 33841.
