Mrs. Sylvia Stokes Brown

September 4, 1946 — February 20, 2022

Sylvia E. Brown, born Sylvia E. Stokes (75 years of age), went home to be with our Lord and Savior on 02/20/2022. A lifelong educator and teacher, Sylvia taught at Old Town Elementary for 30 years. Following her retirement in 2005, Sylvia and her husband, Ed Brown, relocated to Lake City, FL where she continued to teach as a substitute teacher. Sylvia also taught piano lessons for many years in Lake City and attended Hopeful Baptist Church where she played the piano and volunteered in the nursery.

Sylvia lived a beautiful life driven by love for her husband, brother, children, grandchildren, and friends. She was an emblem of unending grace and she rarely met a stranger. In fact, for Sylvia, a stranger was just someone who isn’t a friend yet. Sylvia’s positive spirit and ever-present smile embodied her Christ centered character.

Sylvia is preceded in her death by her father, Sidney Earnest Stokes, and mother, Mary Ellen Slay. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Ed Brown, brother Bert Stokes, sister-in-law Connie Stokes, sons William Sydney Ivey and Sterling Ivey, daughters-in-law Angie Ivey and Denise Ivey, and 5 grandchildren, Trevor Ivey (22), Caleb Ivey (19), Bryson Ivey (18), Emily Ivey (16) and Joshua Ivey (14).

The family will celebrate Sylvia’s life in a graveside service officiated by Sylvia’s first cousin, Kenny Slay, at the Homeland Family Cemetery on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon of our great Lord.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in the name of Sylvia Stokes Brown to either the Alzheimer's Association or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
