Mr. Hershall H. Mitchell

October 10, 1925 — November 21, 2022

FORT MEADE - Hershall Hall Mitchell of Fort Meade, FL, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 21, 2022, at the age of 97. He was born in Miccosukee, FL on October 10, 1925, to Albert and Fannie Mae Mitchell and came to Fort Meade in 1947 from Cairo, GA. Hershall married the love of his life, Julia Lucille DeVane, on September 8, 1948. They were married for 74 years and have been long time residents of Fort Meade, FL.

Hershall was a loving husband, father, papa, and mentor who served his Lord faithfully. He went to school in Cairo, GA, but had to quit to help with the family farm during World War II. He proudly completed his GED in 1996 at the age of 71, achieving one of his lifetime goals. Throughout his life, he was a hard worker involved in many business avenues, including farming, groundman and oiler (V-C Chemical), insurance (Gulf Life), fruit harvesting and packing, sales and delivery (Sunbeam Bread, Sunbelt Growers), fencing (Quality Fencing), paper delivery (Tampa Tribune), and tool crib manager (DesTec). He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as Private First Class. He was a member of the Fort Meade Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite, Eastern Star, Fort Meade Historical Society, Fort Meade American Legion, and First Baptist Church of Fort Meade.

Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by brothers and sisters Myrtle Hall, WH Mitchell, Clara Collins, Wendell Mitchell, Jimmy Mitchell, Bobby Mitchell, and Preston Mitchell all of Cairo, GA, and Roscoe Mitchell of Quincy, FL.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille DeVane Mitchell, daughters Linda Worthy (Bill) of Bowie, TX, Beth Sequin (Roy) of Livonia, MI, and son, Bill Mitchell (Val) of Nahunta, GA. Five granddaughters, Brandi DeLeon (John), Theresa Chestnut (Jesse), both of Fort Meade, FL, Kristine Yurek of Livonia, MI, Brittney Mitchell of Shreveport, LA, and Gretchen Narvaez (Tony) of Detroit, MI. Two step-granddaughters, Elizabeth Nakonezny (Bryan) and Victoria Solimanto (Joe) of Michigan. Nine great-grandchildren, Taylor Myers (Colen Oakes) of Tampa, Autumn Myers, Harley Myers, Lindsy Chestnut, and Savannah DeLeon of Fort Meade, FL, Tabetha Narvaez, Austin Narvaez, Elizabeth Narvaez, and Slade Narvaez of Detroit, MI. Three step great-grandchildren, Alexander Caine, Kennedy Solimanto of MI and Dakota Chestnut (Brittany) of Bartow, FL. One great-great grandson, Jesse Dakota James Chestnut of Bartow, FL. Brother-in-law, Floyd DeVane of Fort Meade, FL, Sisters-in-law: Jean Mitchell and Nell Mitchell of Cairo, GA, Freida Martin (Bill) of Lakeland, FL, and Ginny Morris (Claude) of Avon Park, FL. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A Masonic Memorial will be held at Hancock Funeral Home in Fort Meade, FL on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at 6:00 pm. Friends and family are welcome.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Fort Meade. Visitation begins at 10:00 am, followed by funeral services at 11:00 am. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Meade, FL.

In lieu of flowers, for those wishing, donations may be made in Hershall’s memory to the Masonic Home, 3201 1st Street NE, St. Petersburg, FL 33704.
